Birds from Brazil 1

August 2012 we went to Brazil for the 7th time and our third time that we travelled to the Atlantic Forest. Again we visited the beautiful REGUA area and Serra dos Orgaos with a lot of endemic species (only occurring in a specific country). Unfortunately we just had two weeks so we also added two very nice areas, Serra do Cipe and Serra do Caraca. The Monastery of Caraca is famous in the world for it's Maned Wolf, easiest spot to see this incredible mammal (near-threatened).
First some impressions from REGUA (Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu), it protects one of the last stands of tropical rainforest left in the severely depleted Atlantic Rainforest, or Mata Atlântica, in Brazil

Marshy area with Capibara's and White-faced Whistling Ducks, here it's possible to see more than 100 species of Birds in one day in this area!

Common Gallinule

and a lonesome Great Egret

the very nice Guapi Assu Lodge Guapi Assu

Feeders in the garden attracting Hummingbirds like the Swallow-tailed Hummingbird

And during the night beautiful moths can be seen

From Guapi Assu it's easy to drive to the impressive Serra dos Orgaos, two excellent local guides are available from the lodge. En route, these displaying Streamer-tailed Tyrants

and near Sumidoro, the vulnarable Three-toed Jacamar, just 18cm tall

Suddenly a lot of noise, Howler Monkeys on their way!

Next week part 2, we will go higher into the mountains for incredible Hummingbirds!
